Having written Drumming 1/2, I thought it'd be easy to crank out a 3rd for NME. I think I sat outside on the steps of highridge and just improvised this mostly on my lap. I recorded it, transcribed it, and orchestrated it. The marimba cadenza has a hint of that Carter Beauford solo Drumming 1 is based on, but it's largely just transcribed improvisation if my memory serves me correctly.
I was fortunate enough to have this read by Eighth Blackbird when they came to do a workshop at MU in Feb. 2012. I was amazed at how well they sight read it. I remember some feedback from that was, "How about not keep the instruments always locked together (i.e. flute/clarinet are always playing thirds)."
All in all, this was a bit of a lazy effort on my part and I think it could've been better with some more effort. I like the harmonic language and rhythms. But from a musicians perspective this piece is pretty one-dimensional.
