What Even Is Jazz?

Piece for Oboe and Piano

I took oboe lessons from Dan Willett for a semester and he suggested I write a piece. I thought the oboe sounded like a soprano sax so I wrote a piece with LeRoi Moore in mind. It was pretty easy for me to find an excuse to connect something to DMB back back then. I did actually try to take advantage of the oboe's nuances in this piece (notably using the alternate fingerings for one part).

The piece is a pretty straightforward ABA form. Primitive but it's not too bad here. Of course it doesn't have too much in common with jazz, probably just what I thought jazz was then.

The performance was Dan on oboe and me on piano. We got through it reasonably well.
